Jake Lassiter, our intrepid defense attorney and former Miami Dolphin linebacker, plays a different role in this Paul Levine book. Unlike the others in the series, Lassiter himself is on trial for first-degree murder of his girlfriend-banker. Proclaiming his complete innocence, Lassiter sees a carefully stacked deck of evidence against him as this courtroom novel races along at a page burning pace. Almost all of these courtroom thrillers have their moments to highlight the attitudes and approaches that the lawyers take. In this one, a courtroom scene describing a question and answer during Lassiter's trial was described this way: The prosecutor smiled at the defense attorney the way a barracuda smiles at a mullet. For anyone who has ever been deep sea fishing, this very descriptive line draws a picture that is absolutely unmistakable.Many of the same characters in other books of this series appear in State vs Lassiter, including Jake's Granny Lassiter, his nephew Kip and the always present and helpful former medical examiner Doc Charlie Riggs.Jake Lassiter's world exists in the heat and humidity of South Florida - primarily Miami. So when I read one more of these books, I'm already halfway there knowing how much I enjoy them.If you haven't read any of Paul Levine's Jake Lassiter novels, you're missing a lot of great reading. They can be read in pretty much any one of them being your first. All of them can be read at any time. There's no real "order" to them, so do yourself a favor and pick up a title or two (or more) and I assure you that you'll become a big fan, too.
